Our aim is to deliver a reliable and responsible workforce, and so all our staff have extensive Health and Safety training and we as a company have been accredited within the CHAS scheme.

We carry out a wide range and size of contracts, for example a small school play area to a large £1m plus car dealership. We class ourselves as self sufficient and we own our own plant – tracked excavators, JCBs, rollers and BG210 road paver and directly employ all our own operators. We strive to work as safely as possible and are committed to continuous improvement and development of our staff.

Information & Instruction
When new employees commence their employment with our company, they have an induction where they are introduced to the company etc. At this induction, they are instructed on the use of, and provided with, all relevant PPE. They are issued with a copy of the employee handbook which they are encouraged to read as this contains all information relating to their employment and all aspects of company policy. In addition to the employee handbook, employees are always able to contact a member of management if there is any issue they are not clear about.

Existing members of staff are briefed regularly at on-site meetings and also given toolbox talks relevant to the job they are doing at the time. Before jobs are commenced, we
produce job specific method statements and risk assessments.

We currently employ 15 men, who all hold a CSCS card and are required to take the relevant health and safety test to renew their card periodically. All new employees are added to
our Training Matrix schedule and  are given training relevant to their particular job. e.g Road
and Streetworks (SWQR). Our drivers operate a wide range of machinery e.g wheeled and
tracked excavators above and below 5ton, wheeled/articulated dumpers, rollers, dumpers,
mini diggers etc. They hold NPORS cards and also receive ongoing assessment on the
various machines they operate.

Our employees are also trained in other job specific areas, eg Handling of Abrasive wheels, Confined space entry procedures, and almost 50% of our employees have attended the one day ‘appointed person’ first aid at work course. Our accident statistics are very low, with no
accidents in the last 2 years, and just 2 in the previous year. Following these incidents, all
employees were re-instructed on the correct procedures - our target being zero accidents.
Management and supervision
All management and supervisors hold a CSCS card, and are also required to attend a 2 day
SSSTS construction skills course, to keep them up to date with current practices and health
and safety legislation. Our supervisors hold the Road and Streetworks (SWQR) at supervisor level. We have a high ratio of supervision to workforce with a Manager and
a foreman on each site, and they are monitored by our independent H&S advisors.
We also have independent site safety inspections and an annual audit, which are carried out by our Health and Safety advisors (Mecsafe Ltd). Our H&S advisors also carry out regular site visits, and report back to our Managing Director.

Consultation & communication
Management consult regularly with staff, through onsite meetings to establish how jobs are progressing and to identify potential problems before they materialise, and for employees to raise any issues they may have. Tool box talks are conducted regularly. Operatives are always consulted on welfare arrangements, PPE requirements and other general safety issues on site via an annual questionnaire. This is used to establish if our operators have any concerns with the PPE they are currently using or any other concerns they are unable to voice by any other means.
